Finding the right sealant for motorhomes and caravans

When installing a solar system or sealing windows and Roofhoods, a permanently elastic sealant should be used. Otherwise, cracks may appear in the hardened sealant due to the vibrations that occur when driving.

UV-resistant sealants can be painted over

The range of sealants includes a suitable product for every application. High-quality sealants for outdoor use have extra UV protection, such as Dekasyl MS7 sealant. If the sealed area is to be painted afterwards, a silicone-free sealant, such as Sikaflex 552 AT, is particularly suitable.

Clean surfaces and sand down paint

Before applying the sealant, the relevant area of the motorhome or caravan must be thoroughly cleaned. In order for the sealant to adhere properly later, the surface must be clean, dry and free of dust and grease. No agents containing oil, such as thinners, may be used for cleaning. Suitable cleaning agents are in particular silicone remover, acetone and brake cleaner. If the surface in question on the motor home or caravan is painted, the paint must first be sanded off.

Apply sealant without primer

With many sealing compounds, the pre-treatment also includes the application of a primer. This is a liquid that acts as an adhesion promoter. The primer improves the adhesion properties of surfaces. With modern sealants based on MS polymers, the pre-treatment with a primer is not necessary. Dekalin refers to this property by the letters "MS" in its name. In the case of Sika sealants, Sikaflex 552 can be used without a primer.

Adhesive tapes are not only used for attachment.

A strong adhesive tape should not be missing in any motorhome or caravan. Especially holes or cracks in water hoses can be easily sealed with a waterproof tape. A damaged awning that can no longer be fully retracted is a particular hindrance. In this case, duct tape, such as the fabric-reinforced Power adhesive tape from Allcolor, is the first step. A strong adhesive tape can be used to fix torn-off or defective add-on parts until a professional repair is possible.
